Welcome to Laughing Badger Woolens
The story of Laughing Badger Woolens begins with a lifetime love for animals and a creative drive to design handmade wearables. In 2009, the family’s alpaca journey began when they acquired their first alpacas and dived into farm life. Many years later, life has shifted and new interests have replaced raising livestock. Maegan is a student working to earn a degree in wildlife biology. The farm no longer hosts animals, but since alpaca socks are so lovely and Maegan is frequently asked for more, she continues to stock and sell them. Because the farm was always based around family, the name “Laughing Badger” represents the two sons’ names.
Maegan spins, dyes, weaves, knits, and uses other fiber arts to create one of a kind, wearable pieces. She is self-taught, and always curious to learn new fiber arts and other crafts. Enjoy our natural and hand-dyed sock selection, and discover a range of handmade items available in the near future.
Alpaca fiber features many extraordinary qualities besides extreme warmth and comfort. It has superior wicking capabilities, which leaves your feet comfortably dry instead of soggy (-sorry cotton). Through this natural technology, alpaca has the capability to keep you either warm or cool, depending on the temperature, because it brings thermo-conductive moisture away from your body. Alpaca fiber is also structurally different than wool, for example, because the scales on alpaca fibers lay flatter against the shaft of each fiber, making it feel smoother and less scratchy. Our alpaca is farmed and harvested both here in the US as well as through fair trade practices in Peru.
